Marlin and Syvilla Bolson, Lynn, Loren and Priscilla.

Marlin Algernon Bolson, son of Lawrence Carlyle and Violet Minnie Bertha (Young) Bolson, was born  at his parents' home on Locust Road, Decorah, IA. He was baptized at Decorah Lutheran Church on 4 May 1924.

Marlin attended Sunday School and Bible School and was confirmed on 5 Jun 1938 at Decorah Lutheran Church. He attended Decorah public schools and graduated from Decorah High School in 1942. Marlin played basketball while in high school.

Marlin was drafted in the Army during World War II. On 12 Jul 1943 he departed by train from Calmar, IA on his way to the European Theater. He was stationed in England and also in France and the Belgium/Rhineland area. Marlin served as a Chaplain’s Assistant. He was awarded two Bronze Stars. Marlin was in Europe for about 2 1/2 years.

After his discharge from the Army, Marlin enrolled at Luther College. He graduated in 1949 with a major in economics and minors in chemistry and biology.

Marlin was office manager of the L.C. Bolson Co., a wholesale manufacturer of livestock and poultry feeds. The business was sold in 1992.

On 25 Mar 1951 Marlin married Syvilla Tweed at the Beaver Creek Lutheran Church near Joice, IA. Syvilla Mae Tweed, the daughter of Martin and Bernice Tweed, was born near Joice. She was baptized and confirmed at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church. Her parents farmed in the

Joice area. Syvilla has three brothers: Maynard, Gerald and Kerry.

Syvilla graduated from Joice High School in 1845 and from Luther College in 1949 with a major in Bible and minors in music education and elementary education. She taught in the Forest City from 1949-51. Syvilla has taken additional courses in music, art and elementary education at Luther through the years. She completed a major in elementary education at Luther in 1961. She also has taken graduate courses at the University of Iowa. Syvilla is a substitute teacher in the Decorah Community Schools.

Syvilla has a strong interest in the arts. She has been a piano instructor, church organist, choir director and given weaving and spinning lessons. She regularly exhibits her work at arts and crafts shows and demonstrates throughout the area. Syvilla is a member of the Oneota Weavers and a number of other weaving and spinning associations. She has served as director of the Decorah Regional Arts Council. Syvilla also is very active in the American Association of University Women.

Marlin and Syvilla belong to the Sons of Norway, Valdres Samband, Vesterheim Museum and the Ameri-can-Scandinavian Foundation. They are active members of Decorah Lutheran Church. Marlin has served on a number of committees and held several offices in the congregation. Marlin and Syvilla enjoy skiing, boating and their large home and yard on the Locust Road.

Ransome Lawrence Bolson, son of Lawrence Carlyle and Violet Minnie Bertha (Young) Bolson, was born 4 Aug 1918 on the family farm 3 miles north of Decorah on Clay Hill. He was baptized 1 Sep 1918 at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Locust. Ransome attended Sunday School, Parochial School and was confirmed (4 Jun 1933) at Decorah Lutheran Church.
